Political Corruption
Many historians believe that political corruption was the main cause of the fall of the Roman Empire. Within the empire, the Romans never created an effective system to elect new emperors. Many of of the citizens disliked the system of choosing political leaders. At one point, the Praetorian Guard gained the ability to elect Rome's new emperor. Unfortunately, the guard had separate ideas as to how Rome was to be governed. Due to twenty five emperor assassinations, emperors were afraid to run for office.
