Because of civil wars in Italy, Roman soldiers were withdrawn from the Danube River. This left the borders of Rome's territory vulnerable to attack. The Goths soon attacked Roman land and eventually, Rome itself was besieged. Also, it was Alaric, the Gothic king who attacked Rome. For years, as Rome weakened, the Romans paid for the Goths to resist attacking. Then, Rome stopped paying the Goths and that was the last straw. Alaric attacked Rome and successfully sacked the city. Many historians believe that this was one of the many reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire.
